AI in the pharmaceutical industry: Those who adopt it will dominate. The rest will disappear.
At PharmagoraPlus 2026, a conference focused on artificial intelligence (AI), moderated by Audrey Chaussalet and Nizar Derkaoui, highlighted just how much this technology could transform the practice of pharmacy in the long term. The main message was clear: pharmacists who quickly adopt AI will gain a major competitive advantage, while those who hold back risk losing efficiency and competitiveness.
The rise of AI in pharmacy can be attributed in particular to the explosion of health data and the widespread adoption of tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and AI modules integrated into industry-specific software. The speakers noted that AI is already becoming established in many practical applications in pharmacies: optimizing inventory through predictive models, detecting drug interactions, supporting patient counseling, and automating time-consuming administrative tasks.
According to experts, this technological transformation could profoundly change the role of pharmacists in the coming years. In particular, AI would free up more time for high-value-added clinical tasks, such as medication counseling, vaccinations, screening, and the monitoring of patients with chronic conditions. The goal, therefore, is not to replace the pharmacist, but to make AI a true clinical assistant capable of analyzing, alerting, and ensuring the safety of certain decisions, while leaving clinical responsibility and the relationship of trust with the patient in the hands of the healthcare professional.
In the next 5 to 10 years, the pharmacy of the future could become a true community health hub—more digitized, automated, and service-oriented. The conference concluded with a strong recommendation: start exploring and experimenting with AI tools now so as not to miss out on this major transformation of the pharmaceutical sector.
